Committee To Begin Visiting Candidates; Transition Events Coming Together
The search for the 13th Bishop of Rhode Island moved another step closer to completion just before Christmas, when the Search & Nomination Committee selected candidates to visit in their home parishes. Teams of committee members conducted 19 Skype (computer-to-computer video) interviews between Dec. 10 and Dec. 22 with candidates who had been chosen from the initial group of 40 applications.
“We had thorough — and candid — discussions about each candidate and how he or she matched the priorities from our profile,” says Lora MacFall, committee chair. “All of those discussions were grounded in prayer and reflection, which helped us through the most difficult decisions. We continue to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit with us in this process. We have been considering a very talented group of candidates, and we are excited about the 10 individuals with whom we will have additional conversations.”
Two-person teams will visit those 10 candidates on weekends in January. Then the committee will meet to discuss the experiences of those teams and select a smaller group of candidates who will participate in further discussions during a discernment weekend to be held in Rhode Island in late February. At this point, the process remains on track for a mid March announcement of the slate of finalists.
The Transition Committee also has been busy. Details are coming together for a special event to celebrate Bishop Wolf’s ministry with us. The celebration will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in East Greenwich. The Transition Committee is arranging for fabulous food, a festive atmosphere and a special slide show of photos from the bishop’s time with us. Rhode Island Episcopalians of all ages are welcome.
The Transition Committee also is making arrangements for the walkabout of finalist candidates May 18 and 19, the electing convention June 2 (at St. Luke’s) and the ordination of our next bishop on November 17.
